Yesterday I titled my post “the best beach” which was a bit over the top but in my defense I can say this may be the best beach in Brazil for us right now. I think that covers all bases.
It is sandy but it is also small so there aren’t any of those expansive endless views of ocean that we got used to in Peru and Chile. The water is warm and we’ve heard from friends a few hundred miles further south that is no longer the case as the southern hemisphere lurches toward autumn. The weather forecast is predicting sun all next week so we are thinking this is going to be a good spot to beach camp until the rains come back. Our neighbors naturally are very nice and agreeable. The Argentines next door are a couple a little younger than us but retired and he’s trying to convince his wife to go to Amazonia. Personally I’m on her side as it was a tough drive and their Sprinter is bigger than GANNET2 and at least as heavy. We met another traveler who works in IT and is planning to go north to the United States. LeeAndersen says his wife is scared and I pointed out most North Americans would be scared to be in Brazil and he looked shocked. Yup I said, they think you Brazilians want to rob us, even as he protested wide eyed. Everyone is scared of everyone I said. Then the actual robber came by with buckets of cookies. He promised no gluten no lactose no added sugar (hardly any) and low fat. They sounded terrible but he gave us a sample. That robbed us of our will power. They tasted like light crispy meringues made as it turned out of arrowroot flour. We bought two bags for $4:50 (25 reals), coconut and passion fruit flavors. And I’m not sharing them with you so there. Those Brazilian robbers, I’m telling you. Oh and we’re paying $16:50 a night including electricity strong WiFi, modern hot showers a dump station and Rusty is welcome. We could be at Boyd’s on Stock Island for $200 a night or here for two weeks for the same price. The shower block is small with one women’s toilet and one men’s each clean and modern but you have to bring your own paper. The single shower is hot and there is an outside cold shower to rinse off and cool down. And there’s a snack bar across the street. And some Art.But we walked a bit further for lunch.
We made a mess of the swimming program as we failed to swim in the appropriate weather window. By lunch time the wind was up, lovely and cool but so were the waves.
We live and learn so an early day with seawater will be our next attempt.
Standing in waves next to eager surfers doesn’t really rate as swimming to me.
We have a few days here I hope to get the wind tides and waves properly aligned to enjoy being in the water.
We were reminiscing and managed to recall the last time we went swimming not in a pool was in a reservoir in Amazonia last September when we drove north from Manaus towards Guyana. A lifetime ago.
Thanks to Layne for the sunset pictures. I was most heroically walking young Rusty.
