As we wait for GANNET2 to be refurbished we try to keep ourselves entertained and Layne is excellent at looking up places to go and things to do. Saturday was TV tower day.
It’s 224 meters tall, or 735 feet in old money, and it includes an observation deck as it is in the middle of the city with superb views. Or so I’m told because guess what? They are replacing the elevators, a job they started last October and will complete, they promise, in September 2029. God knows where I’ll be by then but probably not here. It opened in 1965 so I suppose maintenance from time to time to is probably a good thing. Layne had wanted to check it out for a while so we were glad to get there. And I will point out that as we stood struggling to communicate with the guard several Brazilians came up expecting it to be open. Even our Uber driver when we left was surprised to hear it is closed. So we aren’t just uninformed out-of-towners…so at that point we mooched around and took some pictures. What else was there to do? For a start we could have taken roller skating lessons:
Imagine this view from 700 feet up:
A modest leash.
And Layne has since located a digital tower that apparently is open to the public. It’s a ways away but that won’t stop us as we’re nothing if not intrepid.

Well, bummer. Hope the other tower pans out.
Michael, I know this link looks weird, but it is legit. My Dad was a HAM operator, and I have toyed with getting a HAM license but have too much other stuff going on right now. Being a boater, understanding the limits of VHF, and also learning to figure out position by LORAN, radio is kinda fun. i am also the geek that had a UHF and Hi-VHF antenna that looked just like the one my parents had on the house in the 70's trying to pick up digital HD OTA TV 10 years ago from towers in Washington DC, 65 miles away. I finally gavre up..it was a fun experiment but not reliable enough for Sunday football. Streaming (even live TV) is the new king in the US right now.
