Brazil loves open borders and we have found another one where it meets Uruguay. GANNET2 below is in Brazil in the town of Chui while the butcher’s shop across the street is in Uruguay in the town of Chuy.
It’s the same weirdness we saw driving into Paraguay at Ponta PorĂ£o (“poran”). To get here we drove through the border post and into town without checking out of Brazil while we contacted a vet to get Rusty’s entry papers for Uruguay. We also need to get rid of fresh foods as Uruguay is fussy about that stuff.
Layne’s leg wound is looking nasty despite the antibiotics so we’re going to be checking with a doctor but we still hope we can get into Uruguay before the Easter weekend shuts businesses down. The border should be open but we need the papers to be able to cross.
We have a pleasant quiet campground near the beach at Barra do Chui but the town itself is the usual slightly rundown dusty border town giving off that rather hustle filled vibe. It’s not threatening or violent but just rather rundown and uncared for.
It’s also full of Uruguayans spending less money in Brazil and everyone speaks Spanish. One friendly dude told us gas across the border is expensive.
In Brazil regular is about $4:85 a gallon but Google says in Uruguay it’s $7:20 slightly less expensive than French Guyana which at $8:20 a gallon wins the prize for most outrageously expensive. Anyway that’s what we are up to today with details to follow tomorrow.
Rusty got his share as we empty the fridge.Trying to follow Layne into the pharmacy:Checking on the campground dogs…the chief security officer.
The good news is we seem to have hit Fall with highs near 80 and much less sweating. Country number 19 coming up.
