In the picture below the grassy mound is Ancon Hill. During the era of the Canal Zone it was US territory and flew the Stars and Stripes marking the entrance to the Pacific end of the Canal. When we transited in 1999 the border fence was gone but the separation was very visible.
Layne thought the statue was taking a difficult dump, I thought it was bowing to Panama’s new masters from China. I was closer it turns out. The statue is known as Greetingman and it came from South Korea in 2016 as a gift from the republic as part of a worldwide commemoration of Korean emigrants.

He misses Boquete. I know he does. The vet said after his bloodwork that he is parasite free and in perfect health but he is getting vitamins now to combat old age. I remember the criticism that he’d die a horrid death if he came with us. He’s thriving.
