Most tourists visit Cocora to see the world’s tallest palms, but not us; we went to say hello to a donkey
We drove up the valley in the morning amidst the other eager visitors but our friends who advised us to check this scenic area out, forgot to advise us Rusty isn’t welcome amid the natural wonders. Well bugger; we turned around.
Obviously we didn’t get the Instagram pictures but these are wax palms.
I don’t want to be rude or dismissive but not being a stranger to palms they look pretty normal. Tall yes, but still just palms.
And remember this is still rainy season so clouds and drizzle and thunderstorms are part of the scenery.
The problem is Colombia wants tourists and tourist sites but there are so many beautiful areas to create tourist attractions requires some stand out scenery. Cocora Valley is certainly pretty but it was okay Rusty kept us out. We weren’t going to hike anyway.
The road in is also the road out and mostly it’s in pretty good shape but narrow so some encounters require stopping.
We stopped for a lonely donkey,
And gave Rusty a walk.
And enjoyed viewing a spectacular hole.
They are tall, those wax palms.
Tour buses bring loads of people to the town of Salento and then they ride Jeeps up and down the valley.
It was a pretty drive, about half an hour each way in low gear.
We had plans for when we got back to town.
Roughly where we are.
Salento, a tourist town filled with young foreign backpackers and lots of hustle asking us if we want to buy.
Not my kind of town but we threw detonators at explosives to relieve the tension. Actually we did.
It's a game called Tejo and luckily with our aim there was no danger.
More tomorrow.
