Obama's Shorts

Last night my colleague asked for my opinion in a quiet moment during the night shift.

"Do you think these shorts are too short?" she asked. She showed me a picture of the First Lady stepping off an aircraft while wearing shorts. The caption advised she was on vacation at the Grand Canyon.

I shrugged. How the hell would I know? They look fine to me. I told Paula I don't generally look at mainstream press sites because they make no sense to me. This issue included.

I find it astonishing that I live in the country where Freedom is the watchword and the best use of that freedom is to waste time on issues such as these. How utterly bizarre it is that in a country where you can say anything you want, short of advocating violence, the best the press can come up with is this? Not to mention that we the Baby Boom Generation are writhing on the floor metaphorically trying to tame the fearsome beast of our collective old age: health insurance security. And the focus is the length of a pair of shorts. Why does anyone read this crap? Why does anyone rely on newspapers or television for their news? "Newspapers are dead;" thank God say I.

With all the sources of information and debate open to us at the click of a button am I the only one surprised my fellow Americans, ignorant of their own history, indifferent to the nuances of the great issues of the moment, are wasting time and energy on the hem of a woman's shorts?

Kill your cable, kill your satellite receiver, think for yourself. And ask yourself why are they trying to distract you with this?

Mr Conchscooter:

I am trying hard to follow in your footsteps. Last week I cancelled all but basic Cable (TV). The paper may be the next to go as every morning I pick it up from the front porch and promptly place it in the discard pile waiting for garbage day. I have a DVD recorder which has been disconnected for a while now. I disabled the answering machine and even if I am right beside the phone, I let it ring, except if it is 'reep' of course.
I would be safe to say that the readers of Key West Diary are the most informed persons in the universe. Between scathing soliloquys, monologues, and scathing posts I think we are most informed of the political and major events of the world, for which we are humbly thankful. We are also appreciative of comments from the peanut gallery from our faithful fellow blogger, Mr Jack "r", of twisted minds fame.
As with all minimalist clothing, short shorts are fine with some, while NO shorts are better with others

The same - I do have digital broadcast box thingies and set of rabbit ears.

I am even ripping out the cable high speed internet and going with a local dude's solution of microwaves (and not for making popcorn) - hey I use it for work, otherwise I would not get KW Diary.

I want to meet the genius that got use to pay for commercials? Loathe commercials.

The same here...I have also canceled the cable TV and stopped buying the newspapers...information overflow decease is what we are facing.

I recommend netflix for Americans (or Canadians whose backyards abut the 49th parallel at Tsawassen)wherein you get to pick what program(me)s you want to watch commercial-free. I recommend Netflix even though the Ceo is a Republican who lives in my former home town of Santa Cruz.
I got the sarcasm from blame it on buffet and decided that if politics is what you want then you can have it. And I am not an anti-gummint republican. I think for myself and I like thinking mostly leftist thoughts because my experience through life has shown me the error of the Right is generally in not telling the truth (WMDs in Iraq...) I find I like living in the US because self reliance is preached though rarely is it a virtue that is lived up to by its vocal supporters. I like self reliance ( like not suing when I fell off my Bonneville) and I support helping those in the community less able than me to help themselves. And one gets demoized for thinking such revolutionary thoughts. Oh well. I would stick a biblical quotation in here because I was raised by Benedictine Monks but that's enough politics for one night.

Dear Conch:

I was educated by Jesuits... And I will never be able to thank my mother and father enough for the personal sacrifices they endured to pay for it.

I am neither a conservative, nor a liberal, but a Constitutionalist, who believes in the basics of the document as yhe foundation of all government activity.

Er, okay but there have been a few innovations in the way we live and govern since the late 18th century. Some of them may have slipped your notice but surely not all of them. It would be a fine parlor game (remember them?) to ask oneself if Jefferson would have bonked his slaves had the National Enquirer existed back then, but the issues of today need a rather more decisive reading I think.

You are so right... And so in the minority. It must be that most people don't really care about the big boring issues. Judging by the topics of all the spam mails I get, I can only despair for our kind (human beings, that is).
