The wording is pretty simple and you'd think it would be easy enough to understand but this sign gets plenty of noisy criticism the pages of the Citizen's Voice.

Obviously it's a sign that comes into play in those areas of Highway One that split into four lanes, two in each direction. This is just south of Big Coppitt.

And away stretch the four lanes across the light industrial suburb of Rockland Key, leading away to Boca Chica and ultimately Key West.

And that's the hump of the exit to the Naval Air Station on Boca Chica.

With the intrepid cyclist pushing on toward Key West:

These signs are everywhere along this stretch of Highway One and are largely ignored.

Traffic joins the highway just like any major freeway intersection on the mainland. And it requires traffic to merge from the right which is another complication for people with lane change phobias...

The thing about "slower traffic keep right" is that the wording doesn't say anything about speed limits or having private citizens enforce traffic laws. Some people like to sit in the passing lane and block people going faster than them which is a superb recipe for road rage. One gets to start envying the able cyclist pedaling along smoothly out of the traffic flow:

I spent a fair bit of time hanging out on the shoulder taking pictures:

Not everyone gets the concept of staying on the right until you need to pass:

I get bored with clusters of cars piled up behind someone passing at one mile per hour faster than the vehicles being passed:
As far as I'm concerned by all means trundle along in the left lane, all the more room for me where I am harder to spot...

Pet Peeve - slower traffic not going left.
Always one of my pet peeves too. Was wondering what lane you stayed in when you did that saddle sore.
Congratulations on that, BTW.
Does the great state of Florida have a law to back up the sinage, requiring that right-hand lanes be used except in the passing of slower vehicles?
If so, it should be enforced - people will learn, the hard way if needed. If not, than not only is the DOT wasting money but also adding to potential road rage by implying that such a law exists.
There is a law and people can be pulled over and ticketed for driving in the passing lane. That they aren't just pisses me off more!
I always sty in the right hand lane as much as possible. I figure I am less visible and less obviously speeding. On the iron butt I mostly rode the speed limit (or plus five) which meant less worrying about spotting cop cars which is almost impossible at night anyway.
Oh, don't forget the "unofficial highway pace car" - this is the cat that decided he/she is going to run the same speed as the traffic in the right lane so you cannot pass anyone - and my pet peeve is slower traffic in the left lane (I said not going left - but you all seem to get the drift).
Just goes to show you. Guess I've been ignoring the signs too. Never noticed there were so many on my trips down to KW. I always wondered how Fl would enforce the left lane law? Good in theory...
Conch, forgive me for doing this here,however...i had sent you a email about two weeks ago,did you not get it? We are do to arrive in KW on friday...Please let me know if getting together is a possibility.Hope this finds you well.

It's a $115 fine here in Alberta for "disobeying a traffic signal" to drive in the left lane. Guess how many tickets a year are given out for that offense... yeah, you're right.
On the main highways between cities in Ontario and Quebec, people are generally good about staying right except to pass. On multi-lane roads in town, less so. Here there are entire cadres of those "civilian traffic speed enforcers". They think it's their calling to slow down anyone who dares to try and speed.
When you prod at their stubbornness, what you usually find is a very pig-headed person. At some point in their past, they had some punk in a camaro run up on their trunk, honk and flash brights in rude fashion, so now anyone approaching from behind must be an Evil Speeder and must be thwarted. They usually cite the law in place of practicality when you point out the road rage thing.

bill perhaps yourt e-mail got spam blocked. try again at conchscooter@hotmail.com and I will look for it. we are planning to go to Goombay friday night as I am working the weekend.
Dear Conch Et Al:
I have no patience with people who bottleneck traffic by plodding along in the left lane. I ride in the left lane a lot... And in doing so,. I can tell you the slowest I am moving is 5 to 10 miles per hour faster than the speed limit. And if somebody comes up behind me, I yield the right of way as a matter ot course.
And when I do get caught behind a dope in the left lane, I have no problem with passing on the right, as soon as I can squeeze through someplace.
However, I took a short 80-mile run this weekend, and decided to do it at the speed limit. I was amazed to be riding in 3rd gear most of the way. I thought I was going to fall asleep.
