Eviction

This picture was used today in a headline at Huffington Post. Click to enlarge to get the full awfulness of the image. The young cop helping the man with the walker out into the snow looks like any of a number of Key West cops I know well. I dread the day.The article accompanying the picture was wondering why we have wasted so much treasure to "fix" the banks and not the mortgage foreclosure chaos. Good question. Clearly the picture struck a nerve.

Wow-- this is where we are. It says nothing good about a country as wealthy as we are that we will allow this to happen. Some time ago, a commenter here said something about fundraisers or charitable groups that help people out, asking if groups could do more to help people out. I tried to be unoffensive in my comment but I really wanted skewer that whole idea. Do we really want to get to that place where the only way to help people is to have the wealthiest open their pocket book, all the while patting themselves in the back for how good they are, but then most likely having some addendum to their so-called generosity? There is too much of that going on already. Faith-based groups who receive government funds can and do turn people away if they don't agree with their life-style or choices. They do insist that people have to listen to come to church or have a little sermon...

I no longer blog on politics. It's way too depressing and I get too angry but I do enjoy (as I have said before) your posts on politics.

No kidding. You would have liked the uproar in Key West when the Salvation Army declined to hire a gay dude. I write down what I'm thinking because when I look back I want to know what I was thinking as we got there. (I cannot for instance remember how soon it was that I realised Reaganomics were a tool to deprive us all of social services. I'd like to think I figured it out in the summer of 1983, but probably not).
