West Summerland Sunrise

I have been attracted back to this spot quite a bit lately. I enjoy standing at the top of a thirty foot "hill" and looking out over the water. Cheyenne likes wandering at her own pace smelling the smells so we are both happy. On returning home from work several days ago I got it into my head to drive the fifteen minutes from house to enjoy what promised to be a spectacular sunrise. I missed the arrival of the orb above the horizon but I got some lovely colors reflected off the water.
Pelicans are back for the winter.
It was a lovely still morning of low humidity, abundant dew and temperatures hovering around a perfect 70 degrees (20 C).
I photographed anything that moved and a few things that didn't.
The morning glow gave everything a particular brilliance. The stop sign marks the edge of the Overseas Highway atop the embankment.
Cheyenne was busy in the dawn's early light.
The old Bahia Honda ("deep bay" in Spanish) bridge looked sepia tinted in the light. Then an exceedingly odd thing happened when Cheyenne started nuzzling my legs. I stepped away from her and she followed insistently nuzzling my legs. I looked down and found my Labrador patiently picking sand spurs off my uniform trousers. She pulled one, spat it out and went back for the next of these nasty spiky little buggers. She was taking care of me the same way I take care of her when she starts limping from getting one of these things up in her pads. I have never had a dog take care of me like that.I am very fond of my Labrador. I quite like living in the Keys too. I wonder what the attraction of snow and gray skies are.
We enjoy the bright colors of winter down here.
The state of Florida manifests the most wicked sense of humor unexpectedly. Who would think to park an RV overnight on this vegetated slope?
See your blizzard and raise you another sunny day in Paradise.
This was Ramrod Key from the Overseas Highway as we arrived home.
There are no mountains or deciduous forests or winding twisty roads, but that's okay. We have sun sea and enough sand to make it all worthwhile.

Dear Sir:

These pictures are some of the best shots you have taken to date. The majesty and dignity of the old iron bridge is a marvel to look at. The view of Ram Rod Key was such that I nearly decided to take you up on your offer to come down and stay for a couple of months. Yet there is something haunting about the next to the last shot.

The bit about the dog removing vermin from your trousers was touching too.

Fondest regards,

Chuck on Fleming here:

What Jack said. GREAT shots; great post. the house across the street catches that morning light and literally glows - it's an amazing thing.

Was in Cleveland earlier this week - the difference in light levels is almost disturbing.

thanks.

Oh yeah and I think that's great that Cheyenne is taking care of you!

Dear Jack- I would be insulted if it were only a couple of months.Mkae it a lifetime- oh wait, a couple of months would be a lifetime.
Dear Chuck I drove past ytour house last night, I was walking Cheyenne at Truman Waterfront after a short shift and the bikes looked great.
Dear Judi- Cheyenne is an unusual dog. Well, everybody's is, but I've never had one quite like her. The cold front with temperatures around 65 at night are perking her up.

I was rummaging through the web search for blogs by people who have moved to Key West or the Lower Keys, when I found your blog. Your photos and descriptions are inspiring and soul soothing at the same time.

Having been to KW several times, I am giving myself a year or so to really mull over if I want to move south or not. I am a Native Southern California transplanted to Delaware. While I do not wish to return to Calif, I do want to go south to "warmer lifestyle". My career choice as a paramedic lends itself to more opportunities than some. I would love to chat with you regarding some of this and if you know of other blogs of folks who have moved to the Keys, I would appreciate a point in their direction.

Be safe,

Valarie

I would comment but Riepe's praise has left me speechless.

Conch:

Fantastic posts today. I too thought Bahia Honda never looked as majestic as when captured by your talent. I'll be there Thursday to personally discuss with you the lack of T & A on the blog.

The scoop on moving to Key West? Prepare for a salary cut (if you can get work at all in your field. The ambulance contract has just been changed and the city chose a service charging $650,000 less so the crew at American Medical Response is expecting talk of pay cuts (though Lifecare I think they are, promise no such thing). There may be underpaid openings there.
Life in the Keys is a huge compromise. It is not anything like life on vacation. A great many people move here to party and drink etc...which makes for crappy work colleagues and worse dates. Conchs live their own lives, long time transplants look down on newbies and so forth in One Human Family. Rents are dreadful and accomodations tend to be primitive. Landlords are used to getting burned and distruct tenants...Fun huh?
I like living here more than anywhere else I've lived. A lot of people will tell you the Keys have changed (no duh!)but I make my own keys experience.
In the final analysis the Keys have a tendency to reject some people but not others in ways that are hard to explain. Good luck.

Chuck again -

I agree with you on living here. Bestest place ever, even with all the weirdness tossed into the mix.

How many Conchs does it take to chage a light?

Ten. One to change the bulb, and nine to bitch about how much better the Keys were before the lamp was changed...
