Olivia Street is one way outbound from deep in Bahama Village. On Whitehead Street it is marked clearly by the brick wall of the Hemingway House.
Here at Simonton Olivia is flanked by two distinctive wooden houses. This one on the north corner.
This one on the south corner.
Not every narrow street is one way in Key West but Olivia is, outbound, which is to say away from Duval Street.
Palms and picket fences, and it's a pity it's too expensive they say to bury electrical cables.
Though you'd think they could have done it when they were digging up the streets and building the sewer system.
Royal palms are my idea of a relatively low maintenance attractive tree.
This house was getting refurbished including the tin roof in the old style. Historic architecture guidelines for Old Town are quite strict.
This rather large tree looked like it had skin.
More picket fences and Conch cottages. This block of Olivia is quite picturesque.
I haven't been to Seven Fish for dinner in ages but I very much like this restaurant.
from the outside it's just another little white structure, on Olivia at Elizabeth.
Looking back toward Simonton Street from Elizabeth.
Simple bricks and spaces make quite an effect for a garden wall.
I didn't have the nerve to enquire how much this rental might cost. A lot, I'm sure.

You are a true ambassador of the Keys, it makes me want to go there (especially with the west coast being all gray and rainy again). And I love your header picture. Sigh!
The weather has been perfect, and for me to say that is something because I'll bitch if it gets two degrees (F) colder than I like.
A guilty confession: my wife asked for the air conditioning to be turned on two evenings ago. I was surprised and pleased and hurried to comply, it's been that warm and sunny.
More of the same predicted all next week.
You were pretty close to the place we always stay-- don't know if you remembered. But Andrew's Inn has a house they maintain, The Eyebrow House and we always stay up in Treetop just a block from Simonton there...sigh... As the snow falls, I don't know how many times we've asked ourselves "now what are we doing here in Colorado right now? Oh yeah! Making a living!"
Blah! If we could just win the lottery!
Dear Garibaldi:
Thank you for this delightful literary excursion down Oliva Street. For a moment, I lost the winter doldrums chaining me to the frozen reality of a season that is one snow storm after the other. Your blog sooths the reader with pictures of an architectural style gone by, and tropical plants lost in the madness of bloom.
And today, you manage to evoke an emotion of summer, with a medley of... Enough of this maudlin horse shit. Go back to the previous blog episode to read my critique of the only really decent stuff you've written in a year. I take full credit for inspiring you to write it too. .
Fondrst regards,

It's 18 degrees,a big blizzard, 10 inches of snow and it will be below zero tonight here in Montana. Your pictures are really great and I'm counting down the days until I land in KW for Meeting of the Minds in November.

hunph! this notion that employment opportunities are controlled by a mysterious conspirarsy is astounding. where i work it seems you have to be related to the union steward. so i guess it is the same difference. no I am not related but perserverance and luck and networking I suppose helped. I have " worked" in the Keys years ago-- the was it coral bowl and grill?? met with the local radio sation people for a charity bowl -a-thon do you have internet down there?? cell phone towers and broad band for everyone?? the big push get the internet out to everyone (Obama) well do u have to go to a starbucks to post?
dear anonymous: it is not a conspiracy it's just a fact of life.Like most places who you know is often more important than what you know. Perseverance luck and networking are useful tools down here as elsewheer.
Your comment in tone sounds critical of my conclusions, yet your conclusions seem to agree with mine.
Just one more inexplicable ramble through key west diary.
I detect some sort of anti obama bias in your comment too. I expect he's not socialist enough for me whereas he is over the top taking away your assault rifle for you? Am I extrapolating too much?
after browsing a lot of crappy blogs today, thisone is really a delight!
