Behind Bars

Brady of the blog Behind Bars asked me to write an essay for his page about my upcoming trip to Iowa to retrieve a 33 year old Vespa. I was happy to oblige as Brady not only writes beautifully but also has an innate understanding of what my plan is all about. I was honored he asked me to write for his page. He has a penchant for Hondas, preferably of course old ones. I have a penchant for old Vespas, especially if not too old. Hit the link and see why.

$2,500 for a P200E the seller says is restored (I'd ask to see receipts, of course) is actually a pretty good price. If the engine is stock, I see no reason why you shouldn't make it all the way back to Key West, the P200E being the most reliable scooter Piaggio ever built.

As for your route, you may recall my epic Oregon road trip on the PX150 in 2008, which I concluded afterward would have been much more comfortable on a bike capable of 60 mph, which a P200E is. Or should be.

I am happy for your new acquisition, and look forward to reading your dispatches from the open road. Safe travels, Mr. Conchscooter.

Dear Conchscooter:

I was delighted at the charm and extent of the story that you ran in Brady's blog this evening. I think tyou are in for a great scooter adventure on your run back to Key West. I deeply regret that I will not be able to ride with you on this trip. I can think of nothing more pleasant than to join you in a run through the nation's back roads on a jaunt to Key West.

Infesting Duval Street is on my bucket list of things to do next year. And if fate works for me, I'll do it on a BMW "K" bike.

Fondest regards,

Is it possible that Riepe has never been to Key West?

Conchscooter, I was delighted to have you and the story on Behind Bars. Just maybe it'll give any of your readers who check it out a bit more depth to your personality. I'm not sure anyone (even me) realized how much adventure you've got.

And look at that, it even drew out a coherent comment from Mr. Riepe. You know it's quality when that happens.

You're welcome back any time.

Orin, I recall perfectly that conclusion. I was disappointed in the equally dire performance of Genuine's Stella 150 still advertised as a "60mph+" scooter. I barely saw 50.
Jack thank god you can't be there. My contemplative ride would be turned into a prolonged act of debauchery worthy of MASH the movie. And no, anonymous, Riepe has never harassed a female form at the Red Garter. Amazing but true. Read riepe's book for the story.
Brady, you among few understand the allure of the project.

As long as you keep peeling off the bills there is no harassment at the Red Garter. It's possible his raunchy loquaciousness would get him far, but perhaps not.

Not I'm thinking. Probably he'd do better at Finnigans Wake.
