A flood of Central American children is crossing the southern border of the US and they are unaccompanied by adults. The debate in the richest country in the world is whether to send them back to starve or find room for them among the 320 million desperately underemployed Americans. Political parties are in turmoil as they face elections this fall and humanitarian instincts are crowded out by the need to appeal to voters' baser instincts. The best course of action is do nothing and hope another problem crowds this one off the front pages.
This is no longer the America of the Marshal Plan and such high minded leaders.
