Álamos Market

When it really was Sunday we got up in synch, exercised, showered (it was a water day at the ranch) and went into town. It was hot at 9:30.

Maria, the owner of Rancho Acosta where we’re staying told us it was held in the arroyo in the middle of town. Álamos has a particular layout  with the usual picturesque narrow streets.

However Álamos has two seasons and we are in what everyone hopes are the final days of the dry season. Apparently it can rain pretty hard in the wet season which is what they call summer around here.

There are dry watercourses through town, and as clean as the streets are there by contrast no public trash cans here where trash seems to be dumped regularly.

To make sure pedestrians can cross the fords with dry feet there are lots of pretty stone bridges around town.

It’s a pretty town and has become a gringo winter home which is hardly surprising considering I could have breakfast in Alamos and a late lunch in Arizona. But the Sunday market looked to us like a local’s affair. I don’t know how many foreigners visit the market in winter but this Sunday it was us and Layne saw a couple of foreigners when she was shopping. It was busy.

Fish tacos for lunch. We actually had one of fish and one of shrimp.

In Mexico you get two corn tortillas with the fish and fixings piled on top. Then you get to make two-for-one with each taco. Two becomes four. Pretty slick eh? For 50 pesos ($2:50). We took ours to the van and lunch in the air conditioning.

Layne got some bread as well and I managed to convince her a guava empanada would made an excellent dessert ( it did).

It’s no great event but it was an enjoyable morning stroll. This is the sort of life and color I missed in Baja. I took the picture below on a non market day but you can see the rather attractive river front walkway which Rusty enjoyed. On market day this area is filled with stalls and the river bed is a parking lot. What they do when the river is running I couldn’t say.

I recommend market day in Alamos!
