500 Duval
She isn't about to slug him, this happy babe in the picture below, she was wiggling her hips on the sidewalk which is probably frowned upon where she came from; it looked that way she was having so much fun:
This sort of industriousness, shown below with headband proper cycling gear, should be illegal in Key West. People used to yell at me in Santa Cruz California when they saw me riding my bicycle without a helmet. Key West is Freedom, man! Even to stroke out in one hundred degree (38C) heat.
I don't expect to exist after death and I've given up wondering why an afternoon spent getting one's ear drums pounded and one's liver pickled doesn't seem like such a great use of one's time remaining on Earth. Lots and lots of people disagree with me, and spend d all their free time in Key West doing just that. La Trattoria for dinner? Lots of people would advise you to go for it, lady.
I'd cross the street to 915 Duval but I'm no tour guide. The newspaper tells us that summer indicators show Key West had the highest hotel occupancy rate in the state, and it had seemed, empirically to be the case. But now it's September and the Europeans have gone home, American families are back in school and the town is dead. Check out the 500 Block at about 5:20pm on a weekday:
I lounged in the portico at the San Carlos Theater renewing my acquaintance with the former Cuban Consulate. This plaque advises any who bother to read it that a piece of the walls surrounding Havana was laid here to cement the connection between Cayo Hueso and the Cuban capital (a capitol is a building, a capital is a city please note).
Technically the building belongs to the Cuban Government still though if you bring that up you are likely to get death threats from the Miami Mafia as Castro calls them. I read in the paper they were issuing such a fatwa against a Colombian singer who is holding a "Peace Concert" in Havana later this month. Peace through Death; very Orwellian I'm sure. The funny bit is that Jose Marti who died in a battle in Cuba in 1895 is claimed by both sides as a martyr for Liberty. Castro's lot argues his was fighting the oligarchs, a job that Castro's army finished in 1959. The right wingers argue Marti was fighting to end Spanish colonialism in Cuba. So this weedy little poet ands orator becomes everybody's symbol of Liberty.
He also reputedly gave a speech on the subject of Liberty at a house up Duval Street that is named for him to this day- La Te Da is an abbreviation for Marti's Terrace (La Terraza de Marti) which claim is substantiated in J Wills Burke's excellent book The Streets of Key West. Now men dressed as women pretend to sing at La Te Da. Whatever. Some refreshment from the history lesson, a woman dressed as a woman riding a scooter:
A pigeon observing the scene. It makes you wonder what pigeons think if they do think at all about us beavering about down below.
This woman had places to go and people to see.
It was a slow day in the store so she stepped out for a smoke and had the added benefit of getting to people watch on the sidewalk:
It was a hot afternoon and food transport can make a man break out in sweat:
This guy I don't think would ever consider a bicycle as a proper means of getting around at home. He was wobbling horribly on his rental:
She on the other hand should consider moving here; she handled her bike like a pro. Oh wait maybe she is a local... we'll never know but she flew by straight as an arrow:
That's what I need in the living room. A bronze dolphin. D'you suppose my wife would mind if I spent two months mortgage money to drag that thing home?
Happiness is holding hands in Key West on vacation:
The folks above seemed to have appropriate foot ware, but I couldn't say the same for her. I'll bet she looks drop dead sexy when she's off the scooter though: Monday, September 7, 2009

Riepe's World
Key West is littered with water nymphs like this one at all times of the year. Yesterday I saw a quartet of young women in bikinis and bare feet rounding up their rental scooters, rather inexpertly, and trying to take off up Eaton Street. God bless'em say I, they mean job security for the emergency services. Key West attracts all sorts and if you are homeless or unemployed you too can sit under a coconut tree and have your fill of water nymphs ignoring you.
Or you can be gainfully employed and prefer to listen to television in the comfort of your office while you wait for customers to materialize. I expect that staring at beautiful people wears anyone out eventually:
Boating is always a good choice for whiling away a hit summer's afternoon:
Or you can go for a walk in the sand. Note the physique of the man she has chosen to accompany her. I'm sure she had other offers.Okay, now let's explore the truth of the matter. Sex sells, gross but true (ask riepe if you see him he is on advertising). Money talks, equally gross, and all advertising without exception sells one or other of the above in a welter of false claims.
The vacationers are here for a week, escaping the daily drudge Up North. The residents are working three jobs and not making a dime in September (unless they work for the hated Gummint, as do I, thank God), and if you are thinking about moving to Key West to make a life for yourself, I refer you to the first ever essay I wrote for an experimental blog I started, called back then, Key West Vespa. Which when I sold the unreliable Vespa that adorns the banner photo on this page, I had to re-name.
Jack, I hope these few photos titillate you sufficiently to remind you that you need a good health care plan to stay alive and see how the nymphs of the 21st century grow and develop and make their way on the world's stage.

Party Politics
.
Once upon a time there was an enlightened political party that valued reason and democracy above all else. They were innovative, championed analysis, personal responsibility, and led this country through its darkest hour, preserving the fragile experiment in citizen government, and freeing millions of citizens from the scourge of slavery and the lash of a master’s whip. They can proudly and rightly call Jefferson, Lincoln, and Eisenhower one of their own. But sad to say, that party was hijacked by perhaps well meaning but nevertheless deluded ignoramuses, a few assorted lunatics and violent gun nuts, the lingering residue of the Ku Klux Klan, and gobs of opportunistic sociopaths who created a bizarro alternate universe so simplistic and seductive that they all fell completely helpless under its siren spell.
A few years later a young woman was about to finish her last year of medical school. She considered herself to be a very progressive and educated woman, but her father was a staunch social conservative. One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to knowledge, medicine, and science.
He stopped her and asked her, "How are you doing in medical school?"
She answered that she was about to graduate with a 4.0 GPA, but it had been really tough. She had to study complex subjects for hours and days, and never had time to go out and party. She didn't have time for a boyfriend and didn't really have many college friends because she was spending all her time studying things like advanced chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and anatomy. If not for $50,000 in student loans and a hitch in the Army Reserves, she never would have been able to afford it.
He asked, "How is your friend Mary?"
She replied that Mary was ‘going to’ an unaccredited bible school by mail, there were no lesson plans or exams, and she never studied, didn't have a job, but went to all the parties and was very popular at the mega church. She was always whining about evolution or birth control and expected everyone else to clean up after her constant meddling and poor advice. Mary didn’t even have to show up for classes because there weren’t any.
Dad then asked his daughter why she didn't go to the Dean's office and request that her real MD be given it to her friend who paid 29.99 for a fake diploma at Patriot Freedom Liberty Republic University. That way they would both be doctors and her friend would make just as much as she did.
The daughter angrily fired back, "Ahh, Dad? For the thousandth time, she’s not my friend, she’s a delusional pompous dumbass who thinks science and education are evil. I busted my ass in med school and spent a year and half stitching wounded soldiers back together in Iraq while she prayed for the end of the world and tried to prevent as many children, students, soldiers, and senior citizens as possible from access to decent healthcare. Letting that ignorant, spiteful, racist chicken hawk anywhere near a seriously injured patient would be like signing their death certificate. Have you gone bonkers?"
The father slowly nodded and smiled and said, "Welcome to the modern Republican Party!”
