Pines of Fort Zachary Redux

Now here's some strange news, the Key West Citizen reports this morning that the state Department of Environmental Protection has agreed not to cut down the pine trees at Fort Zachary. According to the agreement the only trees that will be cut down for the next decade are those that are felled naturally or cause a public safety concern. Amazing stuff, considering how hopeless the activist's cause seemed for such a long time. I am delighted.

Repeating a comment I made on the "The Real Key West" blog:

That's a great improvement over the existing situation, but it worries me that the park people are continuing to quote that they'll still be taking out "unsafe or diseased" trees. On the surface that sounds reasonable, but everybody knows it's easy to get a quack "tree surgeon" to declare a good as tree "unsafe" (to get permission to remove it). I'm worried that the park people may still do that with some good trees in there that they had planned to remove prior to this "reprieve".

Perhaps the Save Our Pines people should press the Park people to give them a list of any trees that they currently plan to remove for "safety" reasons and use whatever money they have left to do an independent check-up of those trees....

Oversight is the best way to keep angry bureaucrats honest.

That thought passed through my mind momentarily, but considering how the populace has held such a pitch fork to their throats I don't think the park service will risk riling everyone by playing silly buggers with the spirit of the agreement. And I'm sure Save our pines will be eagle eyed if any tree is threatened with cutting!

This is wonderful news! I'm happy to know that, while businesses may come and go, Ft. Z-T will remain its beautiful self year after year. But yes, as you and lybrand suggest, I hope the people who have fought so hard to save the pines continue to keep an eye out for abuses of the agreement.
Also, thank you for the link! I saw it yesterday, and what a pleasant surprise it was :)

Dang! I take a week off and your posts have multiplied like unattended rabbits. Spent a while catching up. Worth it, though. Historical content, photo entertainment for my eyes, and a subtle dressing of attitude to give it all a little edge.

I spend many long hours at my computer at work so I like to have links to stuff I can read and have it all at my fingertips, and my reading list is fairly eclectic.I change stuff around as and when people lose the desire to post. Besides I don't do forums as they seem to be hives of personality disorders. Except ADVRider which takes me right out of Key West. And irondad who alone in the world understands my own personailty disorder which manifests itself as a fake sense of humor.
