So we got a special weather statement, just for us tonight:
THE STRONG NORTH WINDS WILL DRAW COLD AIR SOUTHWARD THROUGH TONIGHT... WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING INTO THE 40S. UPPER KEYS COMMUNITIES WILL BE COLDEST WITH LOWS AROUND 40 BOTH TONIGHT AND SUNDAY NIGHT. WIND CHILLS WILL DIP INTO THE 30S IN MOST UPPER AND MIDDLE KEYS COMMUNITIES WITH WIND CHILLS DOWN TO AT LEAST 40 IN THE LOWER KEYS.
A WIND CHILL ADVISORY WILL LIKELY BE REQUIRED TONIGHT FOR THE UPPER KEYS AND PORTIONS OF THE MIDDLE KEYS.
FLORIDA KEYS RESIDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO DRESS WARMLY... TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE WET AND RAINY CONDITIONS. ALSO... CARE PROPERLY FOR ANY SENSITIVE PETS OR PLANTS.
THE FOLLOWING IS THE LATEST COLD WEATHER SHELTER INFORMATION...
THE BURTON MEMORIAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH... LOCATED AT 93001 US HIGHWAY 1 IN TAVERNIER... THE ISLAND CHRISTIAN SCHOOL... FAMILY LIFE CENTER... LOCATED AT 83400 OVERSEAS HIGHWAY IN ISLAMORADA... AND ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH... LOCATED AT MILE MARKER 31.3 IN BIG PINE KEY WILL BE OPERATIONAL AS COLD WEATHER SHELTERS WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 50 DEGREES. HOURS OF OPERATION ARE FROM 900 PM TO 700 AM.
As odd as it sounds there are many people with no form of heat in their homes (or boats) and the cold is exacerbated by people not being at all used to it, not having cold weather clothes and the particular nature of the damp air in these marshy islands, which makes it all extra bone numbing. My hope is that we will have a quiet night at work as it will hopefully be too cold for people to go outdoors...It is an ill wind that blows no one any good!

Yes, braving the farmers market today, we could see our breathes. The local newspaper retweeted my tweet of such. This is SWFL? Geesh
I always found that dispatch had us busiest in warm weather. And during the full moon. I swear it's true!
It does seem strange to have cold weather shelters for temps that aren't freezing. However, riders are probably more aware than anyone of the way body heat slowly gets zapped.
Here's to warmer days for all of us nuts!
Mr Conchscooter:
I almost feel sorry for you. I am at the YVR airport and using the free WiFi provided and hope you survive this cold front. In a few short hours we will be sweating in the 80+f degree heat.

Aww, he's really rubbing it in! LOL!!! Keep warm dear, I know this is really cold for you guys. DO you have a pool going yet about whether you get frost for the first time? Sounds like you might get really close. Not wishing it on you, just really familiar with frost/ice/snow myself that's all. I can see my breath here 2/3 of the year!! Hang on, it will be over for you soon!
These 50 degree nights are supposed to continue through Wednesday. Normally it lasts a couple of nights but we are looking at a total of almost two weeks and there's plenty of winter left. At ;east this year our new central air conditioning unit has a very effective reverse cycle heating element.
Dear Sir:
With the understanding that a substantial number of homes in your region have no heat (which has to be some kind of a BOCA code violation), that many people who live on boats have no heat, and that an even greater percentage of locals have no warm clothing, I am seriously recommending the Gerbing's battery-powered clothing. While not cheap, around $200 per garment, one of these jackets or vest would make life a lot more comforatble for folks unaccustomed to a lowe ambient temperature. Even out of the wind, if the surface temperature of everything around you is 40º, you are going to feel cold in a sweat shirt or a hoodie sooner or later.
I'm glad to hear you've got some sort of heat (heat pump?) in the house now. The thought of you guys huddled on the bathroom floor with a space heater running was funny at first... But not if you were compelled to do it on a regular basis.
Screw the pythons.
We have ben trying to conserve cash here by keeping the themostat at 62º. Yet high winds have produced cold spots in the house, and we have cranked it as high as 68/70º to get a sensation of warmth.
I reconnoitered today in the truck. There are literally piles of salt and gravel heaped on virtually every road in a 30-mile radius between here and Newark, Delaware. I won't ride my bike in this shit. Ther gravel is damgerous and the salt will destroy a finish.
Fondest regards,

All things are relative, I guess. I was reveling in 50º weather while riding today. It truly felt like spring in Seattle. Only a few short weeks ago the temperature wasn't getting above freezing. So, by comparison, today was wonderful! Hang in there. You'll be back to sweating soon enough.
Our intake facility up here in the Crossroads of America had over 70 people ensconced in it's windowless walls last week, on a night with temps in the teens and 6 inches of snow on the ground. Sadly, I fear the felonious intent of our populace is adapting to the cold more quickly every year. Hope your night was better...
