A Visit To The Doctor

Like every other thing it was an adventure getting to the doctors office. My wheel chair as issued by rehab is 26 inches wide ( for my fat ass). However it wouldn’t fit in the van.

Back to my room. Transfer from my wheelchair to the van’s using the infamous Hoyer Lift.

Back to the van. Horrendous 40 minute ride across Miami slipping down like toothpaste out of the tube. Three stops to readjust me in the chair on the freeway.

Then the chair transfer at the doctors office. Holy terror standing up and switching chairs under me.

After the checkup and final stitch removal all is well. One suture suppurating slightly. Six weeks rehab. At least to get my pelvis repaired so I can stand. Fine. Lovely.

However we then discover that the 26 inch wheelchair we brought empty into the doctors office will not exit no way no how with 280 pounds of Conchscooter in it. We ponder taking off the door (seriously!)  and decide to do another exhibit of me standing on one barely able leg clinging desperately to a couple of very strong aides.

I stand and shuffle the wheelchair comes through the doorway and we’re out. Thank god.
Then the 75 minute wait for a bigger van to take me and the 26 inch chair back to my room.
Please god soon, meanwhile a taste of the world.

After about 90 minutes a bigger van showed up but the lift was of course too narrow.  By force Alex manhandled the chair onto the ramp and got me in.

And so home to bed. What a day.

Thanks for sharing your day. Looks quite challenging. Admire your spirit and strength. Hang in there. Think of you several times during the day so it’s nice to get these updates. Best, Michigan

What do football players ride in when theyre injured? Tell them you used to play for the Saints or the 49ers. Maybe they could come up with better equipment. Sorry, I'm pissed.

What a production that was! You actually had to stand and shuffle??? Twice?! OMG!! That doesn't sound like a good medical decision. You must be more exhausted than you are after a broga workout or a day in the rehab torture chamber! You certainly deserved a green tea latte, at least, after all that commotion. Hope you got some pain meds and get a decent night's rest. Thanks for the update. Hope tomorrow is easier for you. KWBound

They Hoyered me back to bed after 9 hours in wheel chairs. My tail bone was killing me.
Good news: I got pain meds immediate and a bed pan in time. I was whining.

Years ago when I ruptured a spinal disc the only procedure which completely took away my pain was when they did an epidural injection of steroids right at the problem site. The injection included marcaine so they could be sure the injection site was correct. Marcaine lasts 8-hours and numbed all the nerves there. So much so I could no longer articulate my knee but I didn't care. It was the only time in months I'd been out of pain! Hoping your recovery is less painful than mine.

Unbelievable they didnt have a bariatric chair or van for larger patients! they specially design and make chairs and walkers for larger people! I've even seen them in the hospital in Birmingham, so if we have them in AL, its unacceptable not to have them in FL. I agree with the comment about the equipment for football players, i bet they dont have to hop and hope! whew. what a day, you deserve a chocolate espresso with some Bushmill's in it!

Having done similar travels with Bob, another big guy, it is exhausting. At least after doing it once you know the pitfalls and can do your best to avoid them next time. So sorry the doctor couldn't come to you.

Don't get me started on how the practice of medicine has changed since my dad practiced. I can only imagine what harsh words he would have. I understand the concept of hospitalists but it is not my idea of how to do it.

Yep, next time demand that they schedule for a bariatric patient.
To and from. Probably don't have many so make sure they are there to pick you up too.
