Still Cold

They keep promising the cold spell will fade away by Thursday when highs will be around 70 (21C) and night time lows around 60 (10C). Meanwhile these icy days and nights continue to plague us.
The north wind is biting, and even though it's sunny I have pretty much lost the will to go outside. My wife and I are lucky this winter, our new air conditioning unit is capable to keeping the house comfortable, though I try not to wonder what the electricity bill will be. It's better than having to sleep in the bathroom to keep warm. Noel showed up to work this morning, but only after Rachel stopped by to pick him up. His car, a three year old Nissan Altima wouldn't start. John said it was a struggle to get his Honda Element going as well. I was horrified to see the Maxima's temperature gauge when I drove away from the police station after a long boring night at work:
I don't suppose the National Weather Service would agree but this equals the lowest temperature recorded in Key West. However by the time I got home all records were shattered:And my gauge under the house was in pretty close agreement: It's not freezing, technically, but my eggplant doesn't like this any more than I do:

Ten days of this is too much but the winter is young and I fear this isn't the last of the cold we will have to live through before Spring.

39 degrees at MM Zero and then I stumble across THIS: "I am thrilled to be joining the great talent and management team at Fox News," (Sarah) Palin said in a statement posted on the network's Web site. "It's wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news."

....The end times are nigh my friends...

That sounds like a bad joke.

Make sure it's warmer in 26 days or I'll be forced to wear a jacket when I get there, and I don't like that idea. :)

Dear Conch:

It's 39º and the cars won't start in Key West! Give me a break! You mean to tell me that the machinery in Key West also gets acclimated to cabana weather?

Other than that, you have my sympathy andf concern. I am shocked that Key West should be the first vestige of civilization to crumble under the disaster of global warming. There is only an 11º difference between Key West and East Goshen tonight.

While I think an evening temperature of 50º -- 55º in Key West is sort of neat, 39º is bad for business, bad for the locals, and tough on the folks who went there to escapre the cold this month. The car's thermometer made for an interesting picture. I'm sorry you had to be the one to take it.

We got a case of Honeybell oranges from Florida today. They taste like a Key West sunset. Not the current sunsets but one of the previous ones.

If I were you, I'd be running through town, picking up the comatose iguanas, and dropping them off a the taxidermist's as fast as I could run. They will make great novelty change purses for cruise ship passengers.

While I don't think much of Sarah Palin's politics, I do think she has a nice ass. And while she is definitely not Presidential material, I voted for a much bigger ass last year, who has certainly delivered what I would have expected from Sarah Palin.

I've got the Beemer on battery life support in the garage. I'm using an Accumate battery tender. According to the LED readout, the battery is holding a full charge. The temperature in the garage hit a high of 35º today.

Warmer times are coming. Can I send you a Thermos bottle or something.

Fondest regards,

Sarah Palin and Jack Riepe walked into an outside 39º (F) in Key West.

"I came here looking for a 'Slow Confortable Screw On The Beach,'" said Palin.

Riepe smiled.

She regained consciousness three days later, with sand burns on her ass.

Drink Recipe (Slow Comfortable Screw On THe Beach)

* 1/2 oz. Schnapps, peach
* 1/2 oz. Sloe Gin
* 1/2 oz. Southern Comfort
* Fill with Cranberry Juice
* Fill with Orange Juice

If it makes you feel any better, Key West was mentioned on the national news tonight. No, I don't suppose it really makes any difference to either you or your cold eggplant. Sorry. I was trying.

Normal temperatures are scheduled to return Thursday. Until then we shiver on. A colleague of mine has her family in Pennsylvania sending her a space heater as none are available locally.
The non starting car had a weak battery. Many cars in Key west do short trips and when the car's oil gets thick they can't cope anymore and the car doesn't start.
If you live in Nebraska or Idaho or some other godforsaken place you sort of expect snow, but when snowflakes were seen falling in a suburb of Miami (Kendall to be precise) it rather does seem newsworthy.
Anything in a thermos from riepe would make me nervous.A present from atticus no doubt.

Should I rush down to Duval to hock a box of block heaters? Free "I Farted An Ice Cube In Key West" shirt with every purchase?
