My wife drives across the Seven Mile Bridge every work day as she teaches adults in Marathon. She never takes it for granted and on fine days puts down the roof on her Fiat 500 and cranks up Sirius on her radio.
The speed limit is a minimum of 40 miles per hour and a maximum of 55 though you will occasionally see flashing light pull a U turn to stop an offender. Just because it is a bridge doesn't mean they won't stop a car on the bridge.
Oddly enough I don't think many people understand that the broken yellow lines mean you can pass on the bridge, though being cavalier about passing will make an awful mess of your life and that of innocent passers-by too. Not to mention blocking the road for possibly hours.
It's not the worst possible place to slip into line and trundle along enjoying the view. You will see a lot of hands out of windows and sun roofs clutching phone cameras as you drive. And you don't just have to drive:
I'm not sure where the fun is pedaling next to traffic with no hope of escape for seven miles but I don't see much fun cycling any of the Overseas Highway as treeless as it is.
I think this tree is probably the hardest tree to photograph in the Florida Keys, though I am sure someone will find another candidate. It's growing on the old bridge and doing quite well by the looks of it. In December you will see it illuminated with Christmas lights though the logistics of getting lights and power out here, disconnected from land, and setting everything up beggars belief.
After the bridge when you are in the Lower Keys proper (Marathon is considered the Middle Keys) there are parks and boat launching areas you can pull over into and stand around and enjoy the views. Better to pull over than crawl along twenty under the limit annoying me and all the other worker bees trying to get somewhere.
It was hotter than blazes walking Rusty along the water even with the shade and a light breeze. I wasn't sure which picture expressed the heat more effectively so I included both:
I took one after the other with my iPhone 6.
And that my friends is how you cross the Seven Mile Bridge in style and with a minimum of fuss.
